Important Note

When to order this test:

1. Patient has appropriate travel history

2. Patient is immune-compromised

3. Patient has had a negative Ova and Parasite Screen (Cryptosporidium and Giardia)

Specimen Type

Unformed stool

Specimen Requirement

Preserved Feces: Pass specimen directly into a dry, clean container.

Submit 3 specimens over 7-10 days, but only 1 specimen every 24 hours.

 

Feces contaminated with urine or water are unacceptable.

Specimens following barium and/or bismuth radiological examinations are unacceptable for 10 days.

Rejection Criteria

Reject if specimen container is unlabeled or leaking.

Reject for inappropriate storage or transport.

Reject if inpatient > 3 days.

Storage and Transport

Transport fresh stool to the laboratory within 30 minutes at room temperature.

If transport is delayed more than 30 minutes, transfer appropriate amount of specimen to a MCC Total-Fix transport media. Shake the specimens to ensure proper mixing with transport media. Store specimens in Total-Fix at 20-25° C and transport within 7 days.
