Specimen Type
bronchial, sputum, lung, tissue
Specimen Requirement
Sputum: Submit entire collection in a sterile container.
Bronchial wash, lavage: 5-7 ml in sterile container. Avoid contaminating bronchoscope with tap water.
Pleural fluid: Submit entire collection in a sterile container.
Tissue: 1 gram in sterile container without fixatives or preservatives.
Add enough sterile saline to prevent desiccation. Do not wrap in gauze or send on a swab.
Rejection Criteria
Reject if specimen container is unlabeled or leaking.
Reject for inappropriate storage or transport.
Storage and Transport
Transport specimens to the Microbiology Lab within 1 hour at room temperature.
For transport times > 1 hour, store at 2-8 C and transport at 2-8 C within 24 hours.
