Test Code LAB51 Bilirubin, Newborn

Important Note

Order this test for newborns <10 days old.

Specimen Requirement

2 mylar-wrapped hematocrit tubes, clay sealed on one end or 0.4 mL blood collected in plain, brown, SST, PST or heparin microtainer.

Protect specimen from light.

Specimen Stability

Direct light at room temp for 1 hour may cause up to a 50% decrease in bilirubin. 2-8° C.

Premature:

  • 1-8 mg/dL (up to 24 hours old)
  • 6-12 mg/dL (up to 48 hours old)
  • 10-14 mg/dL (3-5 days old)

Full Term:

  • 2-6 mg/dL (up to 24 hours old)
  • 6-10 mg/dL(up to 48 hours old)
  • 4-8 mg/dL (3-5 days old)
