Test Code LAB5075 C. difficile PCR with reflex to Toxin

Important Note

Laboratory testing for toxigenic C. difficile is only recommended for patients with clinically significant diarrhea (3 or more loose stools in the past 24 hours) and no history of laxative or stool softener use in the past 48 hours.  Testing is not recommended for children < 2 years old.

Submit unformed stool in a sterile, leak-proof container.

Rejection Criteria

Formed stool, unlabeled specimen, leaking specimen

Storage and Transport

Store refrigerated up to 72 hours.  Ideal specimens are < 24 hours old.

Testing Schedule

Testing is performed daily.

Method

C. difficile toxin by NAAT/PCR with reflex to immunoassay. The immunoassay detects GDH (glutamate dehydrogenase) antigen, which is found in both toxigenic and non-toxigenic C. difficile, and toxin(s) A/B antigen(s). Specimens that test positive for NAAT/PCR will be tested by immunoassay for the presence of toxin(s).
