Specimen Type
Unformed stool or Rectal Swab
Specimen Requirement
Feces: Pass specimen directly into a dry, clean container.
Rectal Swab: Carefully instert a swab about 1 inch beyond the anal sphincter. Gently rotate the swab to sample
the anal crypts. Feces should be visible on the swab.
Rejection Criteria
Reject if specimen container is unlabeled or leaking.
Reject for inappropriate storage or transport.
Reject if stool is formed.
Reject if no feces visible on swab.
Storage and Transport
Transport the specimen to the Microbiology Lab immediately at room temperature.
If transport is delayed, specimens may be stored at 2-8° C for up to 72 hours before testing.
After 72 hours, specimens must be stored at -20 C or colder for up to 7 days.
