Specimen Requirement
Vaginal Swab.
1. GeneXpert (Cepheid) -Open collection package that contains the pink-capped Xpert® Swab Transport Reagent tube and individually wrapped collection swab. Discard the larger swab. Panther (Hologic) - Peel open Aptima Multitest transport collection package.
2. Remove the swab, taking care not to touch the tip or lay it down.
3. Gently rotate the swab for 10 – 30 seconds. Ensure the swab touches the walls of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab.
4. Open transport tube. Identifying the scoreline on the collection swab shaft, carefully break the swab shaft against the side of the tube at the scoreline. Re-cap the transport tube and tighten the cap securely. Label the tube and transport to laboratory in a sealed biohazard bag.
Rejection Criteria
Reject if specimen container is unlabeled or leaking.
Reject for inappropriate storage or transport.
Storage and Transport
Transport to the Microbiology Lab at room temperature.

Panther (Hologic) MVP - Weekdays.
Reference Range
GeneXpert (Cepheid) MVP - Not Detected for Bacterial Vaginosis, Candida Group, Candida glabrata and/or Candida krusei, and Trichomonas Vaginalis.
Panther (Hologic) MVP - Not Detected for Bacterial Vaginosis, Candida Group, Candida glabrata, and Trichomonas Vaginalis.
