Nares swab

Specimen Requirement

Nares swab: Use a double Culturette swab to collect the specimen by inserting both swabs about 1 inch into one nares, gently rotating it against nasal mucosa, swabbing the anterior nares only.  Remove the swabs, and repeat on the 2nd nares and place in the transport tube. Collect 1 swab at a time for infants. 

Rejection Criteria

Reject if specimen container is unlabeled or leaking.

Reject for inappropriate storage or transfer.

Reject duplicate specimens per day.

Storage and Transport

Transport swab to Microbiology Lab at room temperature within 24 hours.

If transport is delayed, specimens may be stored at refrigerated temperature for up to 5 days before testing.
